What is the Centre for Maths Excellence?
C4ME is a Department for Education funded project charged with the research and development teaching and learning in maths in further education.
There are 21 centres across England which are hubs for action research, training, innovation and the sharing of successful practice over the whole FE sector.
What is Happening at GIFHE?
The C4ME Team and the maths team are one and the same, working in tandem to fufill the DfE brief.
The entire maths team is carrying out action research along side National Trials of teaching and learning techniques.
C4ME has developed a groundbreaking scheme of work – The Focused 15 – which has been designed to hone students’ maths skills for life, as well as the GCSE exam. This mastery scheme is being rolled out across the whole maths department and forms a major part of C4ME’s action research focus. The scheme of work has garnered a lot of national interest!
The C4ME network is fast-growing, with partners on both sides of the Humber.
TES Awards - Shortlist
We are so proud to say that although we did not win, we were shortlisted for the TES Award in ‘Best Teaching and Learning Initiative’ for the Focused 15.

Scheme of Work - The Focused 15
Update for September 2020 –
We have a new 70 objective SoW that we have sequenced and created a new F15 wheel for, this can all be found here.
Currently, we are looking through our ‘Scheme of Work’ to see if there are any objectives we would like to add/remove/edit. We have given our tutors the SoW and full list of objectives (can be found here) to teach, however if they feel that an objective is not in the correct focused 15 section, to teach what they feel comes after the objective they are on. The flexibility and fluidity of the outcomes is what is important and that tutors and students all feel as if they have enough time to study and learn. The SoW is an ongoing piece of work and will be updated through trial and error, accordingly.
Update for September 2021 –
As part of our action research, this year we are working with action research group and TEC Partnership partners, East Riding College, to develop a handbook that will guide non-maths specific tutors through The Focused 15, outlining the different approaches that you have use with students for each objective, ensuring that you are giving the student the best opportunity to understand as possible!
FBV and Maths Resources
Along side the C4ME project, we won a bid with the ETF to create Fundamental British Values Maths based resources over various levels. This was a fantastic opportunity for the C4ME team as well as GIFHE’s maths department. You can find the link to the resources here.
